i think this is very true. the closer you are to the investment (geographically and in every other way), the better you can evaluate it before and during your holding period.

i'm not a fan of regionally focused venture funds (i think sector focus makes the most sense), but we invest about 2/3 of our fund in our metro area and that makes me more comfortable.

I take your point about seeing people -- in person. But I have a colleague who might say, "What about the numbers, the data?" Don't they play a critical part in this investing thing? Sure, if folks had been able to meet regularly with Bernie face-to-face and observe closely his business and life, perhaps they would have smelled a rat. (Maybe they would've been fooled even more.) But if those people had paid attention to the raw data, the numbers, even if manipulated to some extent, perhaps too they would have smelled that rat.
